Although having fallen twice in France during his early career, Master Minded came across The Channel with a big reputation. However, he was criticised during his early races in England for his jumping technique, unseating jockey Sam Thomas at Exeter on his debut for Paul Nicholls. The trainer has since gone on record as saying that to begin with Master Minded was “too brave and silly” but having undergone extensive schooling at the Champion Trainers yard he is now very precise and an exciting jumper to watch.
Over the past couple of seasons, Master Minded has been fairly faultless with Nicholls declaring that he is “The best horse I have ever trained”, praise indeed from a man who currently stables Big Bucks, Denman and Kauto Star. Master Minded oozes class but is not afraid of a battle as he showed with a courageous victory over Big Zeb in his most recent victory at The Punchestown Festival in Ireland which also underlined that he is not infallible; perhaps giving others the much needed encouragement to take him on in the future.
Master Minded’s career record in England at the end of the 2008/2009 season read seven wins out of nine races for Paul Nicholls. The horse has now won well over £500,000 in win prize money and hopefully, if staying fit and well, has many years left in the game to become one of the all time greats.
